We are members of the Southern Maryland community dedicated to helping local students start their careers. As part of Leadership Southern Maryland we strive to foster partnerships between local businesses, educational institutions, and community members.

Roland Michael Colina, Sr.

Mike Colina holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Old Dominion University (1981) and an M.S. from the University of Southern California in Systems Management (1985).  His government experience spans the defense industrial base, advanced technologies, and related strategic management of national resources.  In 1990 he founded a government contracting firm from which he recently exited.  His experience includes compliance management with the IRS, DCAA, DSS, DFAR, ISO 9000/14000, EEO & HR, as well as management of business development, profit and loss, contract administration, cash flow and organizational development, to include transition planning and exit strategies.

 

As a member of Leadership Maryland, Mr. Colina understands the value of community based partnerships.

Samuel Baldwin is a senior partner and founder of The Law Offices of Baldwin and Briscoe, P.C.  Mr. Baldwin has practiced family law for over twenty years and handles cases across Southern Maryland. 

 

Mr. Baldwin was raised in Baltimore.  He attended the University of Virginia’s class of 1975.  He returned home to enroll in the University of Baltimore’s School of Law and graduated in 1984. Sam met his wife, Janice Briscoe, in law school and upon graduation moved to St. Mary's county to start a family and pursue a legal career. After working a few years with other attorneys, he opened his own lawfirm around 1990. His wife joined him in 1994 and they have worked together as law partners since then.

 

Mr. Baldwin is heavily involved in various community and civic organizations. Mr. Baldwin believes that his membership in the Leadership Southern Maryland Class of 2016 is another step in learning how to bring groups of individuals, businesses, and organizations together to form a better community. 

Kelly Williams is the Corporate Director of Human Resources for The Cherry Cover Group. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, she began college at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA, majoring in Business Management. 

 

In 1999, Ms. Williams moved to Los Angeles, CA, and then relocated to Great Mills, MD in 2003. She began working for Spring Ridge Middle School, then transitioned to Eagan, McAllister & Associates, Inc. as support for NAVAIRHQ Air 7.0 & 7.3 Total Force Strategy & Management Development Division (TFMD), while earning her AAS degree in Management Development at the College of Southern Maryland. 

 

Kelly began her career with Cherry Cove in November of 2007, bringing many of the practices they still utilize in the company today, which make Cherry Cove a community leader in management services. Ms. Williams has continued her education and is pursuing her BS in Human Resource Magament with the University of Maryland University College. 

Michael Cummings is Director of Admissions at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Cummings holds an Executive Master's in Leadership from Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business and a MA in Education Policy and Administration from The Catholic University of America. 

 

Mr. Cummings recieved his BA in Journalism/Mass Communications from St. Bonaventure University (NY). Prior to his role at St. Mary's, Cummings was Assistant Dean of Admissions for Georgetown's School of Continuing Studies. He has held similar roles in Admissions and Financial Aid at The Catholic University of America, the University of Maryland, and Cazenovia College (NY). He is a member of the National Association of College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) and the Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admissions Counseling (PCACAC). Cummings has presented on admissions growth, changes, and strategy at multiple conferences over the past two years. He also completed an international residency in Cape Town, South Africa related to transition and change leadership in schools.

Katie O'Malley-Simpson is a director-level communication professional with experience in newspapers and public education. Katie knew by high school that she wanted to be a reporter and writer when she grew up, and for more than 30 years she has been on the job in Charles County as a reporter, editor, graphic designer, webmaster, leader, crisis manager, writer, spokesperson, and community volunteer. 

 

Katie jump-started her career writing sports stories for her high school newspaper where she later became editor. She attended college, earned a degree in journalism and along the way served as a sports information officer and writer. Katie began calling Charles County home at age 23 after landing a reporting job at the Maryland Independent. She spent the next 16 years working at the local newspaper, filling the role of reporter, news editor, mangaing editor, and finally editor-in-chief. 

 

In 1994, Katie accepted a public relations job with Charles County Public Schools where she co-developed the school's system's first website while serving as a graphic designer, writer, and editor. Later she was promoted to her current position as Director of Communications/Media Relations to guide the school system's website, television station and public image.

Dr. Josh Grossman teaches physics at St. Mary's College of Maryland. He recieved his Bachleor of Arts Degree in Physics from Williams College in 1996 and obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from Stony Brook University in 2002. He is an expert in Atomic Physics, Quantum Information, and Physics Education. 

 

Dr. Grossman has received three grants from the Office of Naval Research to investigate “High atom number in microsized atom traps” and “Large-Number and Individual-Atom Microchip Traps for Sensor Applications and Fundamental Studies.” The grants for 2009-2015 fund research equipment, student research stipends, and faculty research stipends. Much of the work funded is performed jointly with the Atomic Physics Laboratory of the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division.

Raymond Cannon III 

Raymond Cannon III attended Leonardtown Highschol before going on to recieve a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2008. In 2013, he recieved his MBA from Florida Institute of Technology and a certificate from the University of Virginia, Darden School of Business. 

 

Mr. Cannon is local to St. Mary's County and grew up in a military family. He was drawn to a career as a contract specialist because of his connection to the military and because it related to his interests in business and law. He graduated from the Naval Acquisition Intern Program in 2014 and has worked for the government ever since. 

Ashley Hayden graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a degree in Mathematics in 2011. Upon graduation, she began working as a financial/project analyst for a defense contractor, supporting a division at Webster Field. After working in that capacity for two and a half years she was offered a job as an Engineer and Scientists Development Program Participant at the Cost Department for Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River. 

 

Ms. Hayden grew up in St. Mary's County and had some familiarity with engineering career opportunities at NAS Patuxent River. 

Alicia Jones
Diane Briscoe

Alicia Jones is the supervising school counselor for Charles County Public Schools. Most recently, the Maryland School Counselor Association (MSCA), named Ms. Jones as 2016 Advocate of the Year.

 

Ms. Jones began her career with Charles County Public Schools in 2002 as a counselor at Dr. James Craik Elementary School, where she worked for four years before taking a position at Diggs. In 2011, she received a Charles County Special Education Citizens Advisory Teacher Appreciation Award and a Charles County Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support Leadership Award in 2008. Jones also was recognized by the Board of Education as an exemplary employee in 2005.

 

As the supervising school counselor, Jones oversees the Charles County Public Schools counseling program and supports more than 35 school counselors daily. As part of her job, she helps guide students through interview and career readiness training.

 

Ms. Jones recently participated as an interviewer for senior exit portfolio and interviews. She offers the following advice for students seeking employment, especially with government agencies such as military bases.

Diane Briscoe currently serves as People Pillar representative for NAVAIR Business Financial Managment Department across multiple sites. She serves on NAVAIR University, Intern Recruitment Coordinator, Financial Management certification, Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act Point of contact, training funding, and training courseware. 

 

Ms. Briscoe recieved her Batchelor of Science in Management Studies at the University of Maryland University College.

 

Ms. Briscoe has worked for the government since 1984 when she worked for contradicting in development for the F-18 and Harrier program before it was sold to the Government. From 1984-1986, she served as budget assistant in Wsahington Navy Yard and provided funding to all serviced Commands in accordance with regulations. From 1986 – 1999 Ms. Briscoe served as the acquisition liaison for all Force Warfare Directorate acquisition efforts.  Completed certification for Contracts Specialist via DAWIA program. Most recently, from 2011 -2016 Ms. Briscoe served as Division Head, for Business Financial Management (BFM) Corporate Operations. Responsible for supporting Competency and Program customers within the following disciplines:  Logistics, Acquisition, Engineering, and Corporate Operations.  Supervised over 40 civilian employees, 4 interns, and contractor workforce.
